The Rise of the Insult

Apparently not doing things others want to do merits an insulting term. Recently I found that not going out with some friends made me gay. Wait?!!! not doing a certain thing, or doing certain things totally unrelated to my sexual orientation is a blatant sign of that orientation. When did the term gay become an insult?
I am really lost! To me this makes no sense.

John doesn't want to go out tonight. James wants john to go out tonight. This prompts ...
